Solo Escape Bucket List:

5 Tiny Spaces that live rent free in my head

“Sometimes, you need to be alone. Not to be lonely, but to enjoy your free time being yourself.”

Traveling solo is not something that I have much experience with. That doesn’t mean I don’t think about it occasionally, or a lot. There is something that seems incredibly luxurious about being entirely on your own time. Of course you could argue that this is possible even when traveling with a companion; that alone time is acceptable and ok but you and I both know that isn’t 100% true. Sure there is always time to take personal space and spend an hour or two alone but ultimately you're sharing a schedule with your buds. I am a very early riser, a dream of mine is to wake before dawn and hit the trails (ideally with friends but this has only happened once or twice in my life). Walking through the forest during the first light of day is such a delicious treat. However, when you are the only morning person in the house, sure, you can get out there and hit the trails but when everyone else is stirring at 10 and raring to head out for an afternoon in the mountains you realize your early solo hike wasn’t such a great idea. All of this to say that perhaps we need to allow ourselves some time for traveling alone.

These five tiny spaces live entirely rent free in my mind as my dream solo escapes. While similar in size they are all very much individuals with their own personalities and offerings. A few of these are for absolutely reconnecting, with yourself, with your creativity, or with mama nature. Maybe a little work from home here and there but not everywhere. Some are basecamps perfect for spreading out and exploring but a couple are very much made for arriving prepared and not leaving for a few days. So whether you are traveling solo by choice or by circumstance I hope you can see all the potential for “me time” as I do.

Stone City Tree House

Hardwick, Vermont

I am pretty sure I forgot a piece of my heart the last time I left Stone City Tree House. This cabin was the inspiration for this post. Every time I think of a place I would love to spend a few nights alone I think of this. I love to imagine shutting my phone off for the duration of my stay, spending the precious time I have deep in a book, exploring the creek or any of the local trails. Cooking too much food and falling asleep with the sun. Waking up in the dark waiting for the day to break, sipping coffee, nothing planned. This space just inspires me to create. I think of bringing my watercolors and painting the afternoon sun bursting through the windows or the fire roaring by the water, lit up with moonlight. In my dreams maybe I’m beginning to write a great novel but at the very least I’m reading a great novel! Someday I promise myself that I will make that plan to spend a few “me days” at the treehouse.

Honey Crisp Cottage

Putney, Vermont

This cottage would make the best base camp for some Southern Vermont adventures. Within an hour out the door you have tons of possibilities for hiking, shopping, dining, and skiing just to name a few options. Regardless of how you spend your days here you will adore this cozy cabin. You’ll relish spreading out in the space built easily for three or four people. Huge windows invite the 9 acres of forest surrounding you in, sunshine pours in during the day enveloping you in warmth. Not only for admiring from inside, be sure to explore the trails that lead down to a tree covered brook. Bring a book, blanket and beverage down with you and lose yourself for a few hours pausing only to dip your toes or find a new album to listen to.

Tiny Black A-Frame

Jeffersonville, New York

If I am here alone for any extended period of time I can promise you I will not be getting much done. Unless of course you consider bird watching, reading, yoga, sleeping in and catching up on sleep productive, then I will be getting a lot done! The beauty of this micro living space is the vantage point of the entire home. You could be lounging in bed up in the loft or making pancakes in the kitchen and it won’t make a difference, the view is incredible. Between the Bald Eagles, great blue heron and the dozens of other avian friends, if you are a bird watcher on any level you will enjoy your days at the tiny a-frame.

Tonga Cabin

Saugerties, New York

I am the queen of distracting myself when I have work to do, especially when there is a lot of work that needs doing. When I am at home there are cute cats that demand my attention, neighborhood hustle and bustle, my stuff, chores, etc! Now there will always be something I can preoccupy myself with no matter where I am HOWEVER I could stand to see myself hide away and really crack into some quality work time at Tonga Cabin. This is extended stay territory for sure, a week minimum I’m talking about and it is set up perfectly for this, full kitchen, bathroom including the ability to do laundry. This gorgeous tiny home is surrounded by nature with stunning mountain views out the huge front window. Full of bright and natural light during the majority of the day will make for a great setting to work on a project and then in the evening relax outside by the fire. It doesn’t have to be all work when you’re here obviously! Tonga Cabin is near the Catskill Mountains and many Hudson Valley towns full of shopping and food.

The Scenic Orchard

Barneveld, New York

If I could go back to Scenic Orchard and have a few nights to just chill out I would in a heartbeat. Cancel all of my plans I am busy luxuriating until further notice. It is absolutely a sharable space but I would argue that I would be more than happy here solo. The container home is tucked away in its own little corner of the property, looking out over rolling hills so it is incredibly private.  No one will even know your blasting your favorite guilty pleasure tunes and dancing like a fool. I picture bringing a whole supply of skincare treatments, plush cozy clothing only, my favorite snacks & bevs and creating an environment that is the epitome of “treat yourself”.
